MP4 vs WebM vs MP3: Which Video Format Should You Download?

You find the video you want to download, you paste the link, and then you're hit with a table of formats: MP4, WebM, M4A, audio only, video only, 1080p, 720p, 360p. What do you actually pick?

I completely understand the confusion. After testing dozens of formats across different devices, here's my no-nonsense guide to picking the right one every single time.

If you only remember one thing from this article, let it be this: when in doubt, choose MP4.

MP4 with H.264 encoding is the most universally compatible video format in existence. It plays on every phone, every computer, every smart TV, every media player, and every video editor. It's the format that 'just works'.

The quality is excellent, file sizes are reasonable, and you'll never run into a 'codec not supported' error with MP4.

WebM is great for one specific thing: embedding videos on websites. It offers better compression than MP4 in many cases, which means faster loading times for web pages.

But here's the catch — WebM support outside of web browsers is spotty. Some Android phones play it fine, but many media players on Windows and iOS won't handle it without extra software. If you're not specifically building a website, skip WebM.

MP3 is the king of audio formats. Every music app, every car stereo, every old MP3 player from 2005 — they all play MP3. The quality is good enough for casual listening, podcasts, and background music.

Use MP3 when you want to extract audio from a video for podcast listening, music practice, or creating audio clips.

M4A is MP3's cooler cousin. It offers better audio quality at the same file size (or same quality at smaller file size). It works great on modern devices — iPhones, Android phones, Mac, and Windows all handle M4A without issues.

If you're extracting audio and your device supports M4A, it's technically the better choice over MP3. But if you need broad compatibility with older devices, MP3 is safer.
